Trust in research can no longer be assumed. It has to be designed, governed, and demonstrated across borders, technologies, and institutions.
AI now sits inside almost every scholarly workflow: screening, triage, summarization, review support, discovery. Each of those hand-offs is a decision about where a machine's judgment ends and a person's begins. Very few of them were made deliberately. They accumulated.
This panel at the STM Dinner and Conference in Frankfurt asks who is actually making that call, and on what basis. What has to stay human because accountability requires it, what can safely move to a model, and how a publisher demonstrates the difference to the authors, funders, and readers who are starting to ask.

Maria Kowalczuk manages research integrity auditing at Frontiers, investigating large-scale publication manipulation and shaping the editorial policies that keep it out of the record. She has 20 years in scholarly publishing, 15 of them in dedicated integrity roles, and was founding co-Editor-in-Chief of Research Integrity and Peer Review.

Witold Kozakiewicz directs the Information and Library Centre at the Medical University of Lodz and is President-elect of the European Association for Health Information and Libraries. He writes and speaks on innovation in librarianship, the role of AI tools in library services, and Open Science.

Indira Sen is a Junior Faculty member at the University of Mannheim's Business School. A computer scientist by training, her research sits at the intersection of natural language processing and computational social science, investigating how people use large language models and what social knowledge is embedded in them.

Rob Johnson founded Research Consulting in 2013 and has since led more than 150 projects advising universities, funders, intergovernmental bodies, publishers and software suppliers on scholarly communication. He is Chair of UKSG and a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales.
